You Might Already Be Invisible to 200 Million People
Most business owners have never checked. They spend thousands on Google Ads, social media, and SEO, but they have zero visibility into what AI platforms say about them.
And here's the thing: 200+ million people use ChatGPT every week. Hundreds of millions more use Google Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. When these users ask for business recommendations, AI gives them 1-3 options. Not 10 blue links. Not a full page of results. Just a handful of recommendations.
If your business isn't one of them, you are invisible to the fastest-growing customer acquisition channel in history.
The good news? Checking your AI visibility is completely free, takes about 30 minutes, and requires zero technical knowledge. This guide walks you through it step by step.
Step 1: Test Your ChatGPT Visibility (5 Minutes)
Ask these 5 queries, one at a time:
1. "What's the best [your service] in [your city]?" 2. "Can you recommend a good [your industry] near [your area]?" 3. "I need a [your service]. Who should I go to in [your city]?" 4. "Who is the top-rated [your service type] in [your region]?" 5. "Compare the best [your service] options in [your city]"
For each response, record: - Are you mentioned? (Yes/No) - What position? (#1, #2, #3, or not listed) - What does it say about you? (Copy the exact text) - Who are your competitors in the results? - What reasons does it give for recommending (or not recommending) you?
Example for a dentist in Portland: - "What's the best dentist in Portland?" - "Can you recommend a good family dentist near Portland, Oregon?" - "I need a dentist who is gentle with anxious patients in Portland" - "Who is the top-rated cosmetic dentist in Portland?" - "Compare the best dental practices in Portland"
Pro tip: Try both generic and specific queries. You might rank for "best plumber in Denver" but NOT for "emergency plumber Denver available today." The specific queries often reveal where your optimization has gaps.
Step 2: Test Google Gemini (5 Minutes)
Go to gemini.google.com and ask the same 5 query types.
Pay attention to how Gemini's recommendations differ from ChatGPT's. Gemini tends to pull more heavily from Google Business Profile data, Google Reviews, and Google Maps information. If your Google Business Profile is incomplete or has inconsistent information, it will show here.
What to look for in Gemini responses: - Does it reference your Google reviews? - Does it mention your business hours, location, or services? - Does it provide a link to your website or Google Maps listing? - Are the details accurate (correct address, phone number, hours)?
Common issue we see: Businesses that rank on ChatGPT but NOT on Gemini. This usually means their website content is strong but their Google Business Profile is weak or outdated. The fix is straightforward: update and optimize your Google Business Profile.
Step 3: Test Claude and Perplexity (5 Minutes Each)
Ask the same queries. Claude tends to be more conservative in its recommendations and values verifiable, factual content. If Claude recommends you, it's a strong signal that your authority content is working.
Perplexity (perplexity.ai): Perplexity is the fastest-growing AI search platform, growing 40% month over month. It provides cited sources with every answer, so you can see exactly WHERE it's pulling information about your business.
Perplexity is especially valuable for this audit because it shows its sources. If Perplexity recommends a competitor, click the citations to see what sources convinced it. This tells you exactly what content or platforms you need to strengthen.
Don't skip these platforms. Many businesses only check ChatGPT and miss the fact that they're invisible on Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity. Each platform reaches different audiences. You need visibility across all of them.
Step 4: Score Your Results
For each platform, give yourself a score: - 3 points: You are the #1 recommendation - 2 points: You are mentioned (position #2 or #3) - 1 point: You are mentioned but not as a top recommendation - 0 points: You are not mentioned at all
Maximum possible score: 12 (4 platforms x 3 points each)
What your score means:
10-12: Excellent. You have strong AI visibility. Focus on maintaining it and monitoring for drops after model updates.
7-9: Good foundation. You're visible on most platforms but have gaps. Identify which platforms you're missing and why.
4-6: Needs work. You have some visibility but you're leaving significant revenue on the table. Your competitors are likely capturing the leads you're missing.
0-3: Critical. You are essentially invisible to AI search. Every day you remain here, competitors are locking in positions that become harder to displace. This should be your #1 marketing priority.
The most important data point isn't your score. It's who IS being recommended instead of you. Those businesses have something you don't. Figuring out what that is reveals exactly what you need to change.
Step 5: Identify Why You're Missing (or Ranking)
Problem: Thin or generic website content Symptom: You're not mentioned on any platform Fix: Create comprehensive, authoritative content that demonstrates genuine expertise. Not 300-word blog posts. In-depth guides, detailed service pages, and case studies.
Problem: Few or no reviews Symptom: Competitors with more reviews outrank you Fix: Actively solicit detailed reviews from satisfied customers. Aim for reviews that mention specific services and outcomes, not just star ratings.
Problem: Inconsistent business information Symptom: You appear on some platforms but with wrong details Fix: Audit your business name, address, phone number, and services across your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, and all directories. Make everything identical.
Problem: No structured data (schema markup) Symptom: AI can find your website but doesn't seem to understand your services Fix: Implement LocalBusiness, Service, Review, and FAQ schema markup on your website. This makes your business information machine-readable.
Problem: No author attribution Symptom: Your content exists but AI doesn't cite you as an authority Fix: Add named author bios with real credentials to all content. AI platforms value human experts over anonymous company content.
Problem: Competitor has stronger external presence Symptom: Competitor ranks above you even if your website is better Fix: Build presence on directories, industry publications, and review platforms. AI cross-references multiple sources to determine authority.
Run this audit monthly. AI models update constantly, and your visibility can change with each update. Businesses that monitor regularly catch problems early. Businesses that check once and forget get blindsided.
